Inside the Boxscores is a weekly feature from Matt Fargo that has been widely recognized as the best summation in college football. He takes an in-depth look at each game and pulls out the most pertinent information that will help you handicap games in the future. College football is filled with quirky plays, misleading scores and surprise endings. Fargo takes you inside the action. Baylor 34 COLORADO 31 It took three overtimes to decide this contest as Baylor intercepted a Colorado pass to end the game. It was a tight game throughout as the Bears won the yardage battle by only 31 total yards and no team ever had a lead of more than seven points. Both teams had three turnovers but the Buffaloes miscues were more costly as the Bears scored 10 of their points off turnovers. Colorado had just 75 yards passing. (2) FLORIDA 23 (14) L-S-U 10 LSU outgained Florida in this game 318-288 but the Tigers committed five turnovers that led to 16 Gators points. LSU scored a touchdown on its first possession but then turned the ball over on three of its next four drives. After a safety on the 2nd half kickoff, the Gators took the free kick which led to a touchdown to put the game away. Florida was hurt by 14 penalties for 102 yards. KANSAS STATE 31 Oklahoma State 27 The Cowboys had a 10-point lead late in the fourth quarter but Kansas St. scored two touchdowns in under two minutes to pull out the comeback win. Oklahoma St. scored on its first four possessions of the second half and had a chance to pull off the victory but was intercepted on the final play of the game. The Wildcats scored two touchdowns on special teams, one on a blocked punt and one on a kickoff return. (4) MICHIGAN 31 Michigan State 13 Michigan jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the third quarter and had a total yardage advantage of 296-106 at that point. The Spartans made the game more respectable with late production as they ended up getting outyarded by just 39 total yards. The Wolverines outgained Michigan St. on the ground 211-60 and the Spartans were hurt by 11 penalties. Michigan was just 3-10 on third down conversions. IDAHO 28 New Mexico St 20 The Aggies fell behind 28-13 late in the second quarter and couldn’t recover. In the second half, New Mexico St. was inside the Idaho 33-yard line four times but came away with only one score. The Vandals also had numerous chances in the second half, getting inside the Aggies 32-yard line three times but threw an interception and missed two field goals. New Mexico St. rushed for only 31 yards on 17 carries (1.8 ypc). COLORADO STATE 28 U-N-L-V 7 UNLV scored a touchdown on its first possession of the game but it was shut out the rest of the way. The Rebels had three scoring chances in the second half but were stopped on fourth down all three times, including once at the Rams four-yard line. Colorado St. concluded the scoring by returning an interception 14 yards for a touchdown. The Rebels went just 2-17 on third and fourth down conversions. EAST CAROLINA 31 Virginia 21 East Carolina outgained the Cavaliers 432-298 and won the time of possession battle by over 16 minutes. The score could have been worse as the Pirates missed two field goals and Virginia scored a garbage touchdown with just 18 seconds remaining. A blocked punt by Virginia set up its second touchdown to pull within 10 points but the Cavaliers were forced to punt on their next three possessions and couldn’t get closer. South Carolina 24 KENTUCKY 17 Kentucky fell behind 17-0 and tried to stage a second half comeback but fell short. The Wildcats had only three first half possessions but took advantage in the second half as they entered Gamecocks territory on each of their final five possessions. Kentucky was forced to kick a short field goal, missed another and ended the game at the South Carolina 42-yard line as time expired. Washington St 13 OREGON STATE 6 Oregon St. committed four costly turnovers but was still very much alive. The Beavers drove down to the Washington St. 23-yard line with less than two minutes remaining but a sack on fourth down killed the scoring chance. The Cougars won the yardage battle 355-287 but neither team was able to run the ball. Washington St. rushed for 85 yards on 37 carries (2.3 ypc) while the Beavers had 64 yards on 28 carries (2.3 ypc). SOUTH FLORIDA 38 Connecticut 16 The Bulls jumped out to a 14-0 lead before Connecticut pulled to within five points at the break. South Florida then ran off the first 24 points of the second half to pull away. The Bulls outgained the Huskies 358-261 but 84 of Connecticut’s total came on its final drive when the game was already decided. South Florida rushed for 205 yards on 41 carries (5.0 ypc) while holding the Huskies to 60 yards on 26 carries (2.3 ypc). (19) Missouri 38 TEXAS TECH 21 Texas Tech actually outgained the Tigers 456-306 but the Red Raiders committed five turnovers that led to 28 Missouri points. The Tigers jumped ahead 24-0 thanks to three of those turnovers including two interceptions returned for touchdowns on back-to-back plays. Texas Tech rallied to pull within three points but Missouri scored the final two touchdowns to seal the win. NORTH TEXAS 25 Florida International 22 It took seven overtimes as the Mean Green were able to finally put the game away on a field goal. Neither team got into the endzone in the extra sessions as there were five fields goals and eight field goal attempts that were missed. The redzone numbers were ugly as Florida International went 3-7 while North Texas was a little better at 4-7. The Golden Panthers kicked a field goal with two seconds left to tie the game at the end of regulation. UL Lafayette 31 HOUSTON 28 Houston jumped ahead 21-0 and had a comfortable 15-point lead late in the third quarter before the Cajuns stormed back. UL-Lafayette drove 85 yards for the go ahead score with 1:02 remaining and the defense held the Cougars to a four and out to end the game. Houston finished with only 38 yard rushing on 22 carries (1.7 ypc) while the Cajuns racked up 269 yards on 44 carries (6.1 ypc). U-A-B 35 Memphis 29 Missed opportunities hurt both sides but it was UAB that took advantage of a Tigers third quarter fumble to score the game-winning touchdown. Memphis took a six-point lead but the Blazers scored two touchdowns in just over two minutes to take back the lead for good. UAB finished with 279 yards rushing on 50 carries (5.6 ypc) while the Tigers had 77 yards rushing on 27 carries (2.9 ypc). Central Michigan 42 TOLEDO 20 Toledo jumped out to a 14-0 lead but the Chippewas scored 42 unanswered points to pull off the rout. The Rockets outgained Central Michigan 487-387 but they committed four turnovers that led to 21 points. That included a fumble and an interception that were returned for scores. Toledo won the time of possession battle in each quarter and went 4-5 on fourth down conversions but also committed 10 penalties for 113 yards. U-C-L-A 27 Arizona 7 UCLA only outgained the Wildcats by 70 total yards and while Arizona had only one turnover, it was a huge on. Trying to pull within six points late in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats threw an interception that was returned 89 yards for a touchdown. The Bruins finished with only 60 yards rushing but they held Arizona to -13 yards on 26 carries (-0.5 ypc). Arizona also missed a field goal and turned it over on downs at the 30-yard line. ARKANSAS STATE 10 UL-Monroe 6 Arkansas St. trailed 6-3 at the beginning of the second quarter all the way until late in the fourth quarter when it scored the game-winning touchdown. The Indians outgained UL-Monroe 372-23 but they committed five turnovers, all of which occurred inside the Warhawks 37-yard line including two inside the 25-yard line. UL-Monroe drove down to the 29-yard line but turned it over on downs to end the game. ALABAMA 30 Duke 14 Duke hung around for the majority of the game until the Tide scored two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter in a span of less than a minute. Alabama outgained the Blue Devils 354-275 but trailed by four points at halftime and led by two points late in the fourth quarter. Duke had a chance to take the lead back in the third but missed a field goal. The Blue Devils also fumbled at the goal line late in the first quarter. (8) Tennessee 51 (16) GEORGIA 33 Georgia jumped ahead 24-7 and looked to be in control but the Volunteers went on a 31-3 run capped by a blocked punt in the endzone for a touchdown. The Bulldogs responded by returning the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown but Tennessee tacked on two more touchdowns to pull away. The Volunteers outgained the Bulldogs by just 63 yards but Georgia had four turnovers that led to 21 points. (20) BOISE STATE 55 Louisiana Tech 14 Louisiana Tech took a 7-0 lead after its first possession but the Broncos scored 35 unanswered points to easily pull out the victory. The Bulldogs scored a late touchdown in garbage time and when it was done, they were outgained 489-304. Both of Louisiana Tech’s touchdowns came off fumbles and the two scoring drives totaled just 52 yards. The Broncos finished a perfect 6-6 inside the redzone. (21) Nebraska 28 IOWA STATE 14 Nebraska only outgained Iowa St. 382-315 as the Cyclones were hurt by three fourth down non-conversions, including two inside the redzone. The Huskers did win the rushing battle as they ran for 251 yards on 45 carries (5.6 ypc) while Iowa St. rushed for 53 yards on 24 carries (2.2 ypc). All of Nebraska’s touchdown drives were at least 60 yards long as they controlled close to 14 more minutes of the clock. Wyoming 14 NEW MEXICO 10 Wyoming rallied from a 10-0 deficit to score the only two touchdowns in the 2nd half. The Cowboys outgained the Lobos 318-190 and let New Mexico cross midfield only once in its final eight drives. The Lobos scores came off turnovers that resulted in drives of 23 and 10 yards. Wyoming turned the ball over on three of its first four possessions and crossed midfield four times in the 1st half but came away with nothing. (10) CALIFORNIA 45 (18) Oregon 24 California outgained the Ducks 424-358 and forced four turnovers that led to 21 points. The Bears also returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown. Oregon crossed midfield only once in its first seven possessions and that resulted in a short field goal. The Bears meanwhile were in Oregon territory on 11 of their 13 possessions as they rushed for 235 yards on 42 carries (5.6 ypc). Oregon had just 70 yards on 29 carries (2.4 ypc). UTAH STATE 13 Fresno State 12 Utah St. pulled off the improbable win as it scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass with less than a minute remaining. After the Bulldogs took the lead with 3:56 remaining, the Aggies took the ball 80 yards for the winning score. The Bulldogs got one last chance but could only move the ball 25 yards as time expired. Fresno St. missed two early field goals that ultimately ended up being very costly. TEXAS-EL PASO 24 S-M-U 21 UTEP outgained the Mustangs 387-190 and held SMU to seven first downs but it couldn’t pull away. UTEP jumped out to a 17-0 lead but the Mustangs scored three unanswered touchdowns, the final coming on an 80-yard fumble recovery. The Miners then went 87 yards for the game-winning touchdown. SMU had three chances late but turned it over all three times inside UTEP territory including two inside the redzone. HAWAII 41 Nevada 34 The Warriors racked up 579 yards of offense but the game came down to the final possession. Nevada was down by 20 points early in the fourth quarter and almost pulled off a ferocious rally. The Wolf Pack scored twice to pull within a touchdown and then got the ball back at the Warriors five-yard line after a Hawaii fumble but gained nothing in four plays and Hawaii was able to run out the clock. Northern Illinois 28 MIAMI-OHIO 25 Miami gave Northern Illinois all it could handle as the RedHawks outgained the Huskies 479-340 but couldn’t execute when needed. Miami turned the ball over on downs on its final two possessions following a Northern Illinois touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. The RedHawks had two turnover but both led to touchdowns for Northern Illinois. Miami was just 1-11 on third and fourth down conversions.
